the thigh of Abū al-Dardāʾ, saying, “ʿUwaymir! Salmān is more knowledgeable than you,” three times.” He then related it.
I say: This is an authentic mursal chain of transmission.
981 — “Do not fast on Friday unless you fast a day before it or a day after it.”
Al-Tirmidhī (1/143), Ibn Mājah (1/526), and Aḥmad (2/495) recorded it through the route of al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, with this wording. This is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, and al-Tirmidhī declared it authentic. It has also come through other routes; see the preceding hadith. The hadith, “Friday is a day of festival ...,” is documented in al-Irwāʾ, no. 94. The hadith, “He forbade fasting on Friday,” will appear under no. 1012.
Among its routes is that recorded by al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (1/339), through Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Do not fast on Friday unless you fast a day before it or a day after it.” Its chain of transmission is good.
Aḥmad (2/365, 422, 458, and 526) and al-Ṭaḥāwī also recorded it through the route of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Ziyād al-Ḥārithī, from him, in similar wording. This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are among the narrators of the Six Books, except Ziyād al-Ḥārithī. In al-Taʿjīl it states: “My shaykh said: ‘I do not know him.’” I say: al-Ḥusaynī stated definitively that he was Abū al-Awbar, who is known, though he is more widely known by his kunya than by his name. Al-Nasāʾī, al-Dūlābī, Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim, and others named him Ziyād; Ibn Maʿīn and Ibn Ḥibbān declared him trustworthy, and his hadith has been authenticated.
