‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr related to him from his father, from al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, as a Prophetic report.
Al-Hanna’i said: “We know it only through the hadith of Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth ibn Sa‘d.”
I say: Others knew it through routes other than his, for Abu Dawud transmitted it through the hadith of al-Layth ibn Sa‘d, as you have seen. Its wording is more complete:
“Indeed, fortunate is he who is spared the trials; indeed, fortunate is he who is spared the trials; indeed, fortunate is he who is spared the trials. And how excellent is the one who is tested and remains patient!”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to the conditions of Muslim.
- “The millstone of Islam will turn after thirty-five, thirty-six, or thirty-seven years. If they perish, then they will follow the way of those who perished; but if their religion endures, it will endure for seventy years.” I said: “In one narration, ‘Umar said: ‘O Prophet of Allah, is that from what has elapsed or from what remains?’ He replied: ‘From what has elapsed.’”
This is an authentic hadith and one of the signs of his prophethood, peace and blessings be upon him. ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated it from him through several routes.
The first is from Mansur, from Rib‘i ibn Hirash, from al-Bara’ ibn Najiyah, from him with this wording. It was transmitted by Abu Dawud (4254), al-Tahawi in Mushkil al-Athar (1/235 and 236), al-Hakim (4/521), Ahmad (1/393), Abu Ya‘la also in al-Musnad (f. 255/1), Ibn al-A‘rabi in his Mu‘jam (f. 141/2), Ibn ‘Adi in al-Kamil (f. 91/1), al-Khatib in al-Faqih wa al-Mutafaqqih (f. 63/2), and al-Khattabi in Gharib al-Hadith (f. 116/2–117/1), through various routes from Mansur, with this wording. Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi concurred.
