Abu Nuʿaym narrated it in al-Hilyah (8/377) from Wakiʿ, and al-Hakim (4/308) through ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Walid al-ʿAdani; both from Sufyan, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAqil, from al-Tufayl ibn Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Abu Nuʿaym said: “It is singular; Wakiʿ alone narrated it from al-Thawri with this wording.”
I say: No; al-ʿAdani also followed him, as you have seen. Qabisah likewise followed him in narrating it from Sufyan with the same wording, except for the phrases concerning travelling by night and Allah’s merchandise. Ahmad also narrated it (5/136) from Wakiʿ, while Qabisah added at its beginning: “When two-thirds of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would rise and say: ‘O people, remember Allah! The Tremor has come....’” Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good and authentic hadith.”
I say: Its chain of transmission is good, owing to the well-known disagreement concerning Ibn ʿAqil. Abu Nuʿaym also narrated it through Qabisah (1/256), as did al-Hakim (2/421, 513), who said: “Authentic in chain transmission!” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him. Yet it is only good, for the reason we have mentioned. Muhammad ibn Yusuf also followed him, narrating from us from Sufyan with the same wording as Qabisah’s report. Ibn Nasr narrated it in Qiyam al-Layl (p. 36).
The hadith also has a corroborating report narrated by Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, attributed to the Prophet with the same wording, except for the words: “The Tremor has come....” Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and graded it good. It contains a weakness which I explained in my commentary on al-Mishkat (5348).
