I say: Mahmud ibn Labid has several hadiths in the Musnad that are traced back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Al-Tabarani also narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (1/217/1) through ʿAbd Allah ibn Shabib, who said: Ismaʿil ibn Abi Uways informed us; ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad narrated to me from ʿAmr ibn Abi ʿAmr, with this wording—except that he said: from Mahmud ibn Labid, from Rafiʿ ibn Khadij, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: ʿAbd Allah ibn Shabib is very weak, so his addition cannot be accepted.
952 — “Were the son of Adam to flee from his provision as he flees from death, his provision would reach him just as death reaches him.”
Abu Nuʿaym narrated it in al-Hilyah (7/90, 7/246), and Ibn ʿAsakir (2/11/1), through al-Musayyab ibn Wadiḥ, who said: Yusuf ibn Asbat narrated to us; Sufyan al-Thawri narrated to us from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Abu Nuʿaym said: “Yusuf ibn Asbat was alone in narrating it from al-Thawri.”
I say: He is weak, as is al-Musayyab ibn Wadiḥ. However, it has two corroborating reports that strengthen it:
The first is the hadith of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri. It is narrated by ʿAli ibn Yazid al-Sudaʾi, who said: Fudayl ibn Marzuq informed us, from ʿAtiyyah, from him, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording. Abu Saʿid ibn al-Aʿrabi narrated it in his Muʿjam (folio 143/2), al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (1/135/2), and Ibn ʿAdi in al-Kamil (263/2).
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission, consisting entirely of weak narrators: ʿAtiyyah al-ʿAwfi and all those below him.
The other corroborating report is from Abu al-Dardaʾ. I have documented it in my commentary on al-Mishkah (5312), and Ibn Hibban authenticated it. Thus, the hadith is good, at the very least. And Allah knows best.
