946 — “The feet of the son of Adam will not move from before his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about five matters: his life and how he spent it; his youth and how he wore it out; his wealth—how he acquired it and on what he spent it; and what he did with the knowledge he had acquired.”
It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2/67), Abu Ya‘la in his Musnad (254/2), al-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (1/48/1) and al-Mu‘jam al-Saghir (no. 648—al-Rawd), Ibn ‘Adi in al-Kamil (folio 95/1), al-Khatib (12/440), and Ibn ‘Asakir in Tarikh Dimashq (5/182/1; 12/239/2), through Husayn ibn Qays al-Rahabi, who reported from ‘Ata’ ibn Abi Rabah, from Ibn ‘Umar, from Ibn Mas‘ud, from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, who said it.
Al-Tirmidhi said: “It is a singular hadith. We know it from the hadith of Ibn Mas‘ud from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, only through Husayn ibn Qays, and he is considered weak in hadith due to his poor retention.”
I say: Yet it has corroborating reports that show that he retained it correctly, from the hadiths of Abu Barzah al-Aslami and Mu‘adh ibn Jabal.
1 — As for the hadith of Abu Barzah, Abu Bakr ibn ‘Ayyash narrated it from al-A‘mash, from Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Jurayj, from him. It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Darimi (1/131), Abu Ya‘la in his Musnad (353/2), and al-Khatib in Iqtida’ al-‘Ilm al-‘Amal (no. 1, edited by me). Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, authentic hadith.”
I say: Ibrahim al-Zarra‘ also corroborated him, reporting from Ibn Numayr, from al-A‘mash, with the same chain. Abu Nu‘aym narrated it in al-Hilyah (10/232). Ibn Numayr is trustworthy, but I have not identified this Ibrahim.
