Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

was a trustworthy narrator whose reports appear in both Ṣaḥīḥs. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in his biographical entry on al-Ṣanʿānī: “Truthful, but prone to many errors.” Ibn Abī Ḥātim said in al-ʿIlal (2/107): “I asked my father about a hadith which ʿAlī ibn Maymūn al-Raqqī narrated from Muḥammad ibn Kathīr, from Sufyān. [I said: He then mentioned it and said:] My father replied: ‘This is a false hadith—meaning, through this chain of transmission.’”

Ibn ʿAdī then said: “It has also been narrated from Zāfir, from Muḥammad ibn ʿUyaynah, the brother of Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl. It has likewise been narrated, in a report from Zāfir, from Muḥammad ibn ʿUyaynah, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Ibn ʿUmar.”

I say: Zāfir—i.e., Ibn Sulaymān—was truthful but made many errors. Muḥammad ibn ʿUyaynah was similar: truthful, but subject to errors, as stated in al-Taqrīb. One of the two gave conflicting versions of its chain of transmission: on one occasion, he attributed it to Sahl as its Companion-narrator, and on another, to Ibn ʿUmar. The first is more likely, since it accords with the earlier corroborating reports.

Nevertheless, I have found another route for it from Ibn ʿUmar. Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted it in Tārīkh Dimashq (3/162/3), through Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-ʿAllās: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Uways narrated to us from Mālik, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar. This chain consists of narrators found in both Ṣaḥīḥs, apart from this Ibn al-ʿAllās, whom I was unable to identify.

I have also found for it a mursal supporting report with a sound chain, worded: “Renounce the world and Allah will love you; and as for people, cast this to them and they will love you.”
