an error. Al-Layth ibn Saʿd and ʿAbdah ibn Sulaymān narrated it from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr al-Awdī, from Ibn Masʿūd, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. This is the correct version. I asked Abū Zurʿah, “Who was responsible for the error?” He replied, “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṣʿab.” I asked, “What is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṣʿab’s status?” He replied, “He is a shaykh.”
I say: Through his route, al-Baghawī also transmitted it in The Hadith of Muṣʿab ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī (fol. 138/2), stating: “Muṣʿab narrated to us; my father narrated to me from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah …” with the same hadith. Al-Ṭabarānī likewise transmitted it in The Middle Dictionary (1/137/1) through another route from Muṣʿab, with the same hadith. He said: “No one narrated it from Hishām except al-Zubayrī; his son alone narrated it from him.”
I say: The son was truthful, whereas the father was weak; Ibn Maʿīn declared him weak. After citing it in The Compilation (4/75), al-Haythamī said: “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in The Middle Dictionary, as did Abū Yaʿlā; its chain includes ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī, who is weak.”
As for al-Manāwī’s statement in The Abundant Outpouring: “After attributing it to Abū Yaʿlā, al-Haythamī said: ‘Its chain includes the weak ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī.’ After attributing it to al-Ṭabarānī, he said: ‘Its narrators are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ.’ Al-ʿAlāʾī said: ‘This chain is stronger than the first’”—this is an error, whether it came from al-Manāwī or from al-Haythamī himself. For you have learned that al-Ṭabarānī’s chain likewise includes the weak al-Zubayrī. As for al-ʿAlāʾī’s statement, I do not know its basis.
However, the hadith has several corroborating reports that strengthen it.
