“O Surāqah, shall I not tell you? …” Al-Ḥākim said: “It is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria,” and al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
That is what they both said, but it is defective and interrupted, as the trustworthy ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Muqriʾ demonstrated. He said: “Mūsā ibn ʿAlī related to us: I heard my father say, ‘It reached me from Surāqah ibn Mālik with this report.’” Aḥmad related it (4/175). This shows that ʿAlī ibn Rabāḥ did not hear it from Surāqah; rather, he received it from an unknown narrator. The chain of transmission is therefore weak.
However, this same ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd, as well as Ibn al-Mubārak, narrated it from Mūsā ibn ʿAlī, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording: “Indeed, the people of the Fire …” This will come, if Allah wills, under 1741.
In sum, it is weak and interrupted in its narration from Surāqah, but connected and authentic from Ibn ʿAmr, as will be explained there.
932 — “Shall I not inform you about the people of Paradise? They are the weak and oppressed. Shall I not inform you about the people of the Fire? They are every harsh, overbearing person.”
Al-Ṭayālisī related it (p. 332, no. 2551), as did Aḥmad (2/508), through al-Barāʾ ibn Yazīd, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaqīq al-ʿUqaylī related to us from Abū Hurayrah, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. This version includes their response, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah,” after each of the two questions, and adds at its end: “They are those who do not suffer from headaches.”
Then Aḥmad (2/369) and al-Bazzār (p. 226, in its supplementary narrations) related it through al-Barāʾ ibn ʿAbd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaqīq, without the addition. Perhaps this addition was interpolated by one of the narrators as an explanatory comment. This al-Barāʾ is the son of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd; in the first narration, he was attributed to his grandfather. He is weak.
