It was also reported by Ruḥ ibn ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Maymūna, who said, “Sayyār related it to us, but with the wording: ‘My father narrated to me from my grandfather, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, “Do you love Paradise?” He answered, “Yes, indeed I do.” …’ ”
Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it (5/242) from al-Qaṭiʿī through this second route, and al-Ḥākim (4/168) included it as well, declaring, “Its chain is sound,” a judgment with which al-Dhahabī concurred.
I say: Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Qasrī, the Damascene governor, is the narrator meant here. Al-Dhahabī states in al-Mīzān: “He is truthful (ṣadūq), yet a hateful, oppressive Nāṣibī; Ibn Maʿīn said, ‘A wicked man who reviles ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him).’ ” Even so, Ibn Ḥibbān lists him among the reliable transmitters in al-Thiqat (2/72).
As for his father, ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid, Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentions him (2/2/197) without citing any criticism or endorsement, and Ibn Ḥibbān also places him in al-Thiqat (1/123).
Concerning the hadith itself, al-Haythamī remarks in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (8/186): “It was narrated by ʿAbd Allah, and by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr and al-Awsat with similar wording; its transmitters are trustworthy.”
The report is further supported by a corroborating narration from Abū Hurayrah in the wording: “Love for people what you love for yourself and you will be a believer.” It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/50) and Aḥmad (2/310).
Al-Tirmidhī commented, “It is a gharīb (singular) hadith, and al-Ḥasan did not hear it from Abū Hurayrah.”
I add: The narrator who transmits it from al-Ḥasan—that is, al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī—is Abū Ṭāriq, an unknown transmitter, as stated in
