through Abu Nadrah, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said this. I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.
912 — “When you see those who lavish praise, throw dust in their faces.”
It has been reported from al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abu Hurayrah, and Ubadah ibn al-Samit.
- As for the hadith of al-Miqdad, it has several routes from him. The first is through Hammam ibn al-Harith:
“A man began praising Uthman, whereupon al-Miqdad went over, knelt upon his knees—he was a large man—and began throwing pebbles into the man’s face. Uthman said to him, ‘What is the matter with you?’ He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said [the above].’” Muslim transmitted it (8/228), as did Abu Dawud (2/290) and Ahmad (6/5), through Ibrahim, from him.
The second is through Mujahid, from Abu Ma'mar, who said: “A man stood up and began extolling one of the rulers…” The hadith is similar in wording.
