This is correct, because this ʿAbbad is weak due to his deteriorated memory and his concealment in transmission. A detailed discussion of this, such as is not to be found elsewhere, has already preceded under hadith (633).
Nevertheless, this hadith of his has a corroborating report from the Prophet’s own words, peace and blessings be upon him, which has already appeared as no. (622).
909 — “Adam and Moses debated, and Adam prevailed over Moses.”
Al-Khatib narrated it in The History of Baghdad (4/349) from Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Qasim al-Anmati, known as Bulbul: Abdullah ibn Siwar Abu al-Sawwar informed us: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us from Humayd, from al-Hasan, from Anas, from Jundub or someone else, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said it. Al-Khatib cited it in the biography of this al-Anmati, without mentioning either criticism or commendation concerning him. However, al-Haythami’s citation that follows indicates that he was not alone in narrating it, and that all the narrators above him are trustworthy, except that al-Hasan practised concealment in transmission and narrated it using the ambiguous formula “from.”
Al-Haythami cited the hadith in al-Majmaʿ (7/191), in a more complete version, from Jundub ibn Abdullah and others, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Adam and Moses debated. Moses said: ‘Are you Adam, whom Allah created with His Hand ...’” — the hadith. He said: “It was narrated by Abu Yaʿla, by Ahmad in similar wording, and by al-Tabarani; their narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.”
I say: Ahmad (2/464), Abu Yaʿla (1/422), Ibn Abi ʿAsim in al-Sunnah (143), and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (1/83/2) also narrated it through other routes from Hammad ibn Salamah, with this report, except that he said: from al-Hasan, from Jundub, without mentioning Anas between them. Its wording is: “Adam met Moses, peace be upon them both. Moses said: ‘Are you Adam, whom Allah created with His Hand, settled in His Paradise, and before whom He made His angels prostrate, then you did what you did and brought your descendants out of Paradise?’”
