ʿAbd al-Wahhab ibn Bakht also corroborated him. Ibn Wahb said: “Dawud ibn Qays informed me from him of the same report, but without the words, ‘and the like.’” Its chain is likewise an authentic mursal chain. However, Ibn Bakht had resided in Syria, so it is possible that he received it from al-Yahsabi; thus, neither report reinforces the other, as is apparent.
905 — “Keep your children indoors until the first surge of nightfall has passed, for it is an hour when the devils range about.”
Al-Hakim recorded it (4/284) through the route of Hammad ibn Salamah, who said: Habib al-Muʿallim informed us, from ʿAtaʾ, from Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
Al-Hakim said: “It is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria,” and al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
I say: It is as they both said. Ahmad also has another, abbreviated route for it. He said (3/360): Yaʿqub narrated to us; my father narrated to us, from one of his family, from his father, from Talq ibn Habib, from Jabir, in a report traced back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording: “Beware of the surge of nightfall. It is as though this is what is feared at the approach of death.” Its narrators are trustworthy and are among Muslim’s narrators, apart from the unspecified relative referred to, who is unknown.
906 — “The people most beloved to Allah, Most High, are those most beneficial to people; and the deeds most beloved to Allah are bringing joy to a Muslim, relieving him of distress, settling a debt on his behalf, or warding hunger away from him. For me to walk with a brother to meet a need of his is more beloved to me than observing spiritual retreat in this mosque”—meaning the mosque of Medina—“for a month. Whoever restrains his anger, Allah will conceal his faults; and whoever suppresses his rage, though able to act upon it, Allah will fill his heart
