Abū Ḥafṣ was ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ, and he was weak. There are also reports on this subject from Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ and Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī, transmitted by al-Ṭabarānī through two abandoned chains of transmission; and from Abū Hurayrah, transmitted by Ibn ʿAsākir (15/276/1) through a weak chain.
- “Do not invoke curses upon one another by calling down Allah’s curse, His wrath, or the Fire.” In another version: “or Hell.”
It was transmitted by Abū Dāwūd (4906), al-Tirmidhī (1/357), al-Ḥākim (1/48), and Aḥmad (5/15), from Hishām, who said: Qatādah narrated to us from al-Ḥasan, from Samurah ibn Jundub, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the first wording. Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good, authentic hadith.” Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabī concurred with him.
I say: It is as they said, were it not for al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī’s ambiguous use of “from.” Yet perhaps the hadith is good in light of the other version, for al-Baghawī transmitted it in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (3/448, Maktab edition), through ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Maʿmar, from Ayyūb, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl, who attributed the hadith directly to the Prophet and then cited it.
I say: This is an authentic mursal chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy.
- “Help your brother”—meaning Salmān—with his contract of manumission.
This is part of the hadith of Salmān al-Fārisī, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated by ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Salmān al-Fārisī himself recounted his story to me, saying:
