- “Whoever has two faces in this world will have two tongues of fire on the Day of Resurrection.”
It was transmitted by Abū Dāwūd (2/298), this being his wording; by al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (188); by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad in al-Zuhd (p. 216); likewise by al-Dārimī (2/314); and by Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (folio 98/2), from whom Ibn Ḥibbān (1979) and Ibn ʿAsākir in his History (12/301/1) transmitted it—through Sharīk, from al-Rukayn, from Nuʿaym ibn Ḥanẓalah, from ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, attributed to the Prophet. Al-ʿIrāqī (3/137) said: “Its chain is good.”
I say: This is plausible, for it has corroborating reports, including: “Whoever has two tongues, Allah will give him two tongues of fire on the Day of Resurrection.” Al-Mundhirī (4/31) said: “It was transmitted from Anas by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in the book al-Ṣamt, al-Ṭabarānī, al-Aṣbahānī, and others.” Al-Haythamī (8/95) said: “Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it in al-Awsaṭ, and its chain includes Miqdām ibn Dāwūd, who is weak. Al-Bazzār transmitted something similar, as did Abū Yaʿlā, and its chain includes Ismāʿīl ibn Muslim al-Makkī, who is weak.”
I say: Al-Quḍāʿī transmitted it through his route in Musnad al-Shihāb (folio 39/2), and Abū Yaʿlā transmitted it in his Musnad (2/738), through him, from al-Ḥasan and Qatādah, from Anas, with the same wording.
In sum, the hadith is authentic by virtue of these combined chains. And Allah knows best. Al-Khaṭīb also transmitted it (12/103) through Abū Ḥafṣ al-ʿAbdī, from Thābit, from Anas.
