a section of al-Mukhtārah (folio 89/1), through Ibn Samʿān and Rushdayn ibn Saʿd, both from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿd, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām, from his father, who said: “O Messenger of Allah, tell me something to which I may hold fast.” He said: “Control this,” and he pointed to his tongue.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. Ibn Samʿān was ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ziyād ibn Sulaymān ibn Samʿān al-Makhzūmī, and he was abandoned. Rushdayn ibn Saʿd is weak as well, but the hadith is authentic in light of the preceding report.
I then found another corroborating report, narrated by Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī, from Sulaymān ibn Ḥabīb, from Aswad ibn Aṣram al-Muḥāribī, who said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, advise me.’ He said: ‘Restrain your hand.’ I said: ‘What would I be restraining if I did not restrain my hand?’ He said: ‘Restrain your tongue.’ I said: ‘What would I be restraining if I did not restrain my tongue?’ He said: ‘Do not extend your hand except for good, and do not say with your tongue anything but what is right.’”
Abū Nuʿaym transmitted it in Akhbār Aṣbahān (2/179). Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allāh is Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Samīn, and he is weak.
