This chain of transmission consists entirely of known, trustworthy narrators, except for this Mahjan. He was listed in al-Ta'jil on the basis of this chain, and it states: “Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators.”
In al-Majma' (5/106), it says: “Ahmad and al-Bazzar narrated it, and Ahmad’s narrators are trustworthy.” In al-Jami', it was also attributed to Abu Ya'la. The commentator said: “Al-Harith ibn Abi Usamah, al-Daylami, and others also narrated it from Abu Dharr.”
I say: The hadith has a corroborating report with the wording: “The evil eye is real; it can bring down one who is on a lofty height.” It is therefore strong, and will appear under no. 1250. Then I found the hadith in Ibn Adi’s al-Kamil. He transmitted it through Abu Ya'la, with his chain from Daylam, from Mahjan, with the same wording, omitting Abu Harb between them. Ibn Adi then transmitted it through another route from Daylam ibn Ghazwan, who said: Wahb ibn Abi Dubayy narrated to us, from Abu Harb, from Abu Mihjan, with the same report.
- “Control your tongue, let your home suffice you, and weep over your sin.”
Ibn al-Mubarak transmitted it in al-Zuhd, no. 134; from him, Ahmad (5/259), and likewise al-Tirmidhi (2/65), through Ubayd Allah ibn Zahr, from Ali ibn Yazid, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah, from Uqbah ibn Amir al-Juhani, who said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is salvation?’ He said...” Then he mentioned it. He said: “A good hadith.” This indicates that its chain of transmission is weak, and that is due to Ibn Zahr and Ibn Yazid, the latter being al-Alhani—
