- As for the hadith of Ubayy, it is narrated by Abdullah ibn al-Fadl, from Abdullah ibn Abi al-Jawza, from him, with this wording. It was recorded by Abdullah ibn Ahmad in Zawa'id al-Musnad (5/143), and by al-Diya al-Maqdisi in al-Muntaqa min Masmu'atihi bi-Marw (fol. 141/2).
I say: This chain of transmission is weak. Abdullah ibn Abi al-Jawza is unknown; the biographical scholars overlooked him and did not include a notice for him. However, he was mentioned in the section on kunyas in al-Ta'jil, where it states: “Under the siglum ‘Ab: Abu al-Jawza narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him, and Abu al-Fadl—who is unknown—narrated from him. Al-Azdi said: ‘Abandoned.’” Al-Husayni said in al-Ikmal: “Perhaps he is Abdullah ibn al-Fadl.”
I say: This identification is correct. His hadith concerns the instruction to leave an interval between the adhan and the iqamah. Abdullah ibn Ahmad recorded it in his Zawa'id through Salm ibn Qutaybah al-Bahili, from Malik ibn Mighwal, from Abu al-Fadl, in this manner. He also recorded it through Mu'arik ibn Abbad, from Abdullah ibn al-Fadl, from Abdullah ibn Abi al-Jawza, from Ubayy. Abdullah ibn al-Fadl has a biographical entry in al-Tahdhib. Thus, if Abdullah's kunyah was Abu al-Fadl, then this is the same person; otherwise, it is possible that the wording originally read “Ibn al-Fadl” and was corrupted.
I say: This scribal corruption is supported by the fact that the printed edition of al-Musnad correctly reads: “Ibn al-Fadl.”
- As for the hadith of Jabir, it is narrated by Abd al-Mun'im Sahib al-Saqqa', who said: Yahya ibn Muslim narrated to us, from al-Hasan and Ata, from him, with this wording. It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (1/373), al-Uqayli in al-Du'afa' (266), Ibn Adi in al-Kamil, al-Bayhaqi from him (1/428), and al-Khatib in Talkhis al-Mutashabih (26–27). Al-Tirmidhi said: “We know it only by this route, through the hadith of Abd al-Mun'im, and it has an unknown chain of transmission.”
