“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, mentioned the drinking vessels: gourds, earthenware jars, pitch-coated vessels, and hollowed palm trunks. A Bedouin said, ‘We have no containers.’ He replied, ‘Drink whatever is lawful.’” In another narration: “Avoid whatever intoxicates.”
Abu Dawud (2/132) recorded it through Sharik, from Ziyad ibn Fayyad, from Abu Iyad, from him.
I say: This chain is also weak, for Sharik—namely, Ibn Abd Allah—had poor retention. Thus, the hadith is good when its two chains are taken together. And Allah knows best.
Then I found another supporting report for it, narrated by Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Drink from whatever you wish, and avoid every intoxicant.” Al-Bazzar recorded it in his Musnad (p. 164, al-Zawa’id), and al-Haythami said: “This is a good chain!”
Then I found for it a supporting report better than those mentioned above. Al-Nasa’i recorded it in Visiting Graves, through al-Mughirah ibn Subay’, who said: Abdullah ibn Buraydah told me, from his father, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “I had prohibited you from eating sacrificial meat except for three days ...” The hadith is like the hadith of Ali, but more complete. Its chain is authentic, and its source is found in Muslim. I have cited it in al-Jana’iz (177–178). Abu Ubayd also narrated in al-Gharib (71/1) its final portion found in al-Nasa’i.
- “Leave an interval between your adhan and iqamah sufficient for a person answering the call of nature to relieve himself unhurriedly, and for one who is eating to finish his food unhurriedly.”
It has been narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka’b, Jabir ibn Abdullah, Abu Hurayrah, and Salman al-Farisi.
