However, the hadith is good, for it has a supporting mursal report from Qatadah, which al-Suyuti cited in al-Jami, as narrated by Ibn Jarir from him. Yet he overlooked the fact that it is also reported with a continuous chain in al-Musnad from Jabir! Rather, the hadith is authentic, for its first part is supported by a hadith from Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah recorded by al-Tabarani, and by a hadith from Abu Hurayrah recorded by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others, with the wording: “Avoid the seven destructive sins: associationism with Allah ...” It is documented in al-Irwa; see also Sahih al-Jami al-Saghir (143, 144). Its other part is supported by a hadith from Lady Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her. Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others recorded it; see Sahih al-Jami (3521, 3522).
- “Avoid everything that intoxicates.”
Ahmad (1/145) and al-Daylami (1/1/40), in suspended form, recorded it through Ali ibn Zayd, from Rabi'ah ibn al-Nabighah, from his father, from Ali: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade visiting graves, using drinking vessels, and keeping sacrificial meat beyond three days. Then he said: ‘I had forbidden you from visiting graves, but now visit them, for they remind you of the Hereafter. I had forbidden you from drinking vessels, but drink from them and avoid every intoxicant. And I had forbidden you from keeping sacrificial meat beyond three days, but now keep whatever you wish.’”
I say: This chain is weak. Rabi'ah ibn al-Nabighah and his father are unknown, and Ali ibn Zayd—namely, Ibn Jud'an—is weak. However, the hadith has a supporting report from Ibn Amr, who said:
