Ahmad also recorded it (5/346) with an authentic chain, as al-Hafiz stated; as did Tamam in al-Fawa'id (132/1).
5 — As for the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, Suhayl narrates from his father, from him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was on Hira with Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Talhah, and al-Zubayr. The rock shook, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Be still, for upon you are none but a prophet, a man of consummate truthfulness, or a martyr.”
Muslim recorded it (7/128), as did al-Tirmidhi (4/319), Ahmad (2/419), and al-Khatib (8/161). Al-Tirmidhi said: “An authentic hadith.” In one version, Muslim added: “And Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas.” Ahmad added—and this addition is also found in al-Bukhari’s al-Adab al-Mufrad (337), al-Tirmidhi (2/309), who graded it good, and Abu Nu'aym (9/42)—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “What an excellent man Abu Bakr is; what an excellent man Umar is; what an excellent man Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah is; what an excellent man Usayd ibn Hudayr is; what an excellent man Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas is; what an excellent man Mu'adh ibn Jabal is; and what an excellent man Mu'adh ibn Amr ibn al-Jamuh is.”
Its chain is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria. Ibn Hibban also declared it authentic (2217), and al-Hakim said (3/233, 268, 246): “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
