recorded it (7/38) through other routes, one of them being Yazid ibn Zurayʿ, from Saʿid ibn Abi ʿArubah.

Regarding this Yazid, Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn ʿArʿarah said: “No one was more reliable than him.” Ahmad said: “How meticulous he was, and how retentive!” He also said: “What soundness there is in the hadith of a truthful, meticulous narrator! Whatever Yazid ibn Zurayʿ narrated from Saʿid ibn Abi ʿArubah, do not mind if you do not hear it from anyone else; his hearing from him was early.”

I say: This supports the conclusion that the preserved wording from Saʿid is in fact “Uhud,” since Saʿid related it before he became confused. This is not undermined by the fact that ʿImran also narrated it from Qatadah with the other wording. Al-Tayalisi recorded it (2/139/2516), for this ʿImran—namely Ibn Dawar, Abu al-ʿAwwam al-Qattan—was weak in retention.

It is further supported by the hadith of Sahl ibn Saʿd, who said: “Uhud shook while the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthman were upon it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said …” He then related it with the wording of the hadith of Anas. Ahmad recorded it (5/331) with an authentic chain, as al-Hafiz stated (7/30), though he attributed it only to Abu Yaʿla.

4 — As for the hadith of Buraydah, his son ʿAbdullah narrates it from him with the wording: “He was sitting on Hira with Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthman, may Allah be pleased with them, when the mountain moved. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said …” He then related it.
