—Buraydah—say: “I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say...” and he mentioned it.
This is an authentic chain of transmission according to the criteria of Muslim. Zayd was Ibn al-Ḥubāb, and Ḥusayn was Ibn Wāqid.
It has another route from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah, with the wording: “Truffles are a remedy for the eye; al-ʿajwah is among the fruits of Paradise; and this black seed—meaning shūnīz, which is found in salt—is a remedy for every disease except death.” Aḥmad (5/346) narrated it: Aswad ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated to us, from Wāṣil ibn Ḥibbān al-Bajalī, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah narrated to me from his father, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
This chain consists entirely of trustworthy narrators who are among the narrators of the Six Books, except that it contains a subtle hidden defect: Zuhayr—namely Ibn Muʿāwiyah—erred when he said, “Wāṣil ibn Ḥayyān”; rather, it was Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥayyān, who is weak. Aḥmad said concerning this Ṣāliḥ: “His name became confused to Zuhayr.”
Abū Dāwūd said: “Zuhayr erred in it.” Ibn Maʿīn said: “Zuhayr narrated from Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥayyān and Wāṣil ibn Ḥibbān, but he made them into Wāṣil ibn Ḥayyān,” as stated in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb.
I say: Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated it by the correct route, saying: Ṣāliḥ—meaning Ibn Ḥayyān—narrated to us from Ibn Buraydah, from him, in a more complete version than this. See “Paradise Was Presented to Me” in the other book, no. (3899).
