The following report corroborates the hadith:
- “Everything is by divine decree, even incapacity and astuteness—or incapacity and astuteness.”
Mālik (3/93) narrated it, and from him Muslim in his Ṣaḥīḥ (8/51), al-Bukhārī in Afʿāl al-ʿIbād (p. 73), and Aḥmad in al-Musnad (2/110) and also in al-Sunnah (p. 121), all from Mālik, from Ziyād ibn Saʿd, from ʿAmr ibn Muslim, from Ṭāwūs al-Yamānī, who said: “I met some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah who would say: ‘Everything is by divine decree.’” Ṭāwūs said: “And I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar say it, attributing it to the Prophet.”
It has a corroborating report with the wording: “Everything is by divine ordainment and decree, even this,” and he struck the tendon of his other forearm with his index finger. It is from the hadith of Anas ibn Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “They disputed about divine decree in the presence of the Prophet, and he disliked this most intensely, until his face became as red as though pomegranate seeds had been burst upon it. He said, ‘What are you engaged in?’ They replied, ‘We were disputing about divine decree, O Messenger of Allah.’ He then said...” and cited the above.
Al-Haythamī said (7/208): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ, and its chain contains a group of men whom I did not recognize.”
Notice: The author of al-Tāj al-Jāmiʿ lil-Uṣūl al-Khamsah cited the aforementioned hadith of Ibn ʿUmar with the wording: “Everything is by divine ordainment and decree...” and said (1/29): “It was narrated by the two Shaykhs and Mālik.”
