This hadith of hers has two further routes; see the corroborating reports previously mentioned. It will also come under no. 1819 with the wording: “the black seed.”
- “Birds fly by divine decree, and he liked a favorable omen.”
Al-Ḥākim (1/32), Aḥmad (6/129–130), Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (254), al-Bazzār (131), Ibn ʿAdī (99/1), and al-Sahmī in Tārīkh Jurjān (357) narrated it from Saʿīd ibn Masrūq, from Yūsuf ibn Abī Burdah ibn Abī Mūsā, from Abū Burdah, who said: “I came to ʿĀʾishah and said, ‘My mother, tell me something you heard from the Messenger of Allah.’” She then related it, attributing it to the Prophet.
Al-Ḥākim said: “The two Shaykhs relied upon every narrator of this hadith except Yūsuf ibn Abī Burdah. They did not omit him because of any criticism or weakness, but because he narrated few hadiths; indeed, he was exceedingly sparse in hadith transmission.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
This Yūsuf was also narrated from by Isrāʾīl, and Ibn Ḥibbān declared him trustworthy. Thus, the hadith may be judged good, particularly since its latter half has a corroborating report from the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, which will follow.
Al-Haythamī cited the hadith in al-Majmaʿ (7/209) and said: “Al-Bazzār narrated it and said: ‘It is narrated only through this chain of transmission. Its narrators are narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ, apart from Yūsuf ibn Abī Burdah, whom Ibn Ḥibbān declared trustworthy.’”
He overlooked the fact that it is also found in al-Musnad, and therefore limited its attribution to al-Bazzār; this is an omission.
The hadith also has another route in al-Ṭaḥāwī’s Mushkil al-Āthār (2/342): from Yaḥyā ibn Maslamah (the original text has: Salamah) ibn Qaʿnab, who said: Ḥassān ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Abū Burdah, with the same report, except that he said: “Everything is by divine decree....”
Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from this Yaḥyā. Al-ʿUqaylī said: “He narrated objectionable reports.”
