858 — “Beware of injustice, for injustice will be darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. And beware of avarice, for avarice destroyed those before you: it drove them to shed one another’s blood and to violate their sacred inviolabilities.”
Muslim (8/18), al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (483), and Aḥmad (3/323) narrated it through Dāwūd ibn Qays, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Miqsam, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this.
Its opening portion was also reported from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, in the wording: “O people, beware of injustice, for it will be darknesses on the Day of Resurrection.” Aḥmad narrated it (2/92, 106, 136) through ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Muḥārib ibn Dithār, from Ibn ʿUmar. It also has a corroborating narration in its entirety—apart from the words, “Beware of injustice”—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Injustice will be darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. Beware of obscenity, for Allah does not love obscenity or deliberate indecency. And beware of avarice, for avarice destroyed those before you: it commanded them to sever ties, and they severed
