847 — “Do you know who the bankrupt person is?” They replied: “Among us, the bankrupt person is one who has neither a dirham nor any possessions.” He said: “The bankrupt one of my ummah is he who comes on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting, and zakah, but comes having insulted this person, slandered that one, consumed this person’s wealth, shed this person’s blood, and struck that person. So this one will be given from his good deeds, and that one from his good deeds. If his good deeds are exhausted before the claims against him have been settled, some of their sins will be taken and cast upon him; then he will be cast into the Fire.”
Muslim recorded it (8/18), as did al-Tirmidhi (3/291–292) and Ahmad (2/303, 334, 372), through al-Ala ibn Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good and authentic hadith.”
I say: In his Sahih (8/35), al-Bukhari cited without a chain some of its opening words, with the wording: “The bankrupt person is only the one who becomes bankrupt on the Day of Resurrection.”
848 — “Do you know what these two books are?” We replied: “No, O Messenger of Allah, unless you inform us.” He said of the book in his right hand: “This is a book from the Lord of the worlds, containing the names of the people of Paradise, the names of their fathers, and their tribes. Their number has been completed down to the last of them, so none will ever be added to them or removed from them.”
Then he said of the book in his left hand: “This is a book from the Lord of the worlds, containing the names of the people of the Fire, the names of their fathers, and their tribes. Their number has been completed down to the last of them, so none will be added to them or removed from them.” His Companions asked: “Then what is the point of deeds, O Messenger of Allah, if the matter has already been settled?” He said: “Aim for what is right and draw as close to it as you can. For the one destined for Paradise will have his life sealed with the deeds of the people of Paradise, whatever deeds he may have done; and the one destined for the Fire will have his life sealed with the deeds of the people of the Fire, whatever deeds he may have done.”
Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cast the two books aside with his hands and said: “Your Lord has settled the matter of His servants: a party will be in Paradise, and a party in the Blazing Fire.”
