However, ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus contradicted him, narrating it from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, in a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording. Al-Nasāʾī narrated it and said: “Neither of them is preserved.” And Allah knows best.
Ibn Saʿd (9/191) then narrated it from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿUthmān ibn Abī Sulaymān, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he mentioned it. He said: Abū Bakr dyed his hair with henna and katam; ʿUmar dyed his hair, and his dye was very intense; and ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān dyed his hair yellow. Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr was asked: “And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him?” He replied: “He used to apply al-durr.”
Among the routes from Abū Hurayrah to which al-Tirmidhī alluded is that narrated by the two Shaykhs and others from him, in a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording: “Indeed, the Jews and Christians do not dye their hair, so differ from them.”
I have traced it in Takhrīj al-Ḥalāl wa-al-Ḥarām (105).
837 — “If one of you is in the shade, and the shade recedes from him so that part of him is in the sun and part in the shade, let him get up.”
Abū Dāwūd (4822) and al-Ḥumaydī, in his Musnad (1138), narrated it through Sufyān, who said: Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir told us—while he was leaning on my hand during the circumambulation—“Someone who heard Abū Hurayrah informed me that Abū al-Qāsim, peace and blessings be upon him, said,” and he mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission, were it not for the unnamed man. Some narrators from Ibn al-Munkadir omitted him, and Imam Aḥmad (2/383) said: ʿAffān narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated to us from Abū Hurayrah, in a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This chain meets the criteria of the two Shaykhs. ʿAbd al-Wārith was Ibn Saʿīd, Abū ʿUbaydah.
