“Authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, provided that Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd heard from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd.” Al-Dhahabī concurred.
I say: Al-Bukhārī did not narrate from ʿAmmār, and the chain of transmission is interrupted. ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī said: “Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd did not meet Ibn Masʿūd.” Nevertheless, the hadith is authentic, as the preceding report corroborates it.
836 — “Change your grey hair, and do not imitate the Jews and the Christians.”
Aḥmad (2/261, 499) and Ibn Saʿd (1/439) narrated it through Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, in a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. I say: Its chain of transmission is good.
ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah also corroborated it, from his father, with the omission of the mention of the Christians. Al-Tirmidhī (1/325) narrated it and said: “A good, authentic hadith; it has been narrated from Abū Hurayrah by more than one route.” Then he, al-Nasāʾī (2/278), Aḥmad (1/165), and Ibn ʿAsākir (11/68/2) narrated it through Muḥammad ibn Kanāsah al-Asadī, who said: Hishām ibn ʿUrwah informed us, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from al-Zubayr, in a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, omitting the words: “and the Christians.”
I say: This is a chain whose narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of the two Shaykhs, apart from this Ibn Kanāsah, who is truthful.
