Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

(1/145), al-Ḥākim (1/167)—from whom al-Bayhaqī also narrated it (1/90)—and Aḥmad (5/80), through Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Ḥuḍayn ibn al-Mundhir Abū Sasān, from al-Muhājir ibn Qunfudh:

“He came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was urinating and greeted him with salām. The Prophet did not return his greeting until he had performed ablution; then he apologized to him and said…” He then cited it.

Neither al-Nasāʾī nor al-Dārimī includes the text mentioned above. Al-Ḥākim said: “Authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabī concurred with him.

That is what he said, despite his statement in al-Mīzān: “Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī frequently practised concealment in transmission. When, in a hadith, he says, ‘from So-and-so,’ his use as evidence is weakened—particularly when it concerns someone whom he was said not to have heard from, such as Abū Hurayrah and the like. Thus, they classified his reports from Abū Hurayrah among the interrupted reports.”

Yet it appears that what is meant by his concealment in transmission is only his narration from the Companions, not from others. For al-Ḥāfiẓ, in al-Tahdhīb, abundantly cited scholars’ statements concerning his narrations from people whom he had not met, and all of them were Companions. They did not mention even a single Successor from whom al-Ḥasan narrated without having met him. This is further supported by the unanimous reliance of the scholars upon al-Ḥasan’s narrations from other Successors, to the extent that I do not recall anyone having found fault with any hadith he narrated from a Successor without expressly stating that he had heard it from him. This is what appears clear to me in this matter. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, knows best.

Moreover, this hadith has a corroborating report from Ibn ʿUmar, recorded by Abū Dāwūd (1/54–55) and al-Ṭayālisī (no. 1851), through Muḥammad ibn Thābit al-ʿAbdī, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, with similar wording.

This is a good chain for corroborative purposes, except that it contains an objectionable element for which I criticized him concerning the wiping
