and he said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic!” Al-Dhahabī concurred with him as well.
I say: This is due to their leniency, especially that of al-Dhahabī. For he included this Zāfir among the weak narrators and said: “Ibn ʿAdī said: No one corroborates his hadith.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Truthful, but makes many errors.”
- As for the hadith of Jābir, al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Jaʿfar narrates it from Abū al-Zubayr, from him. Al-Ṭayālisī recorded it in his Musnad (1755), and al-Bayhaqī narrated it from him in Shuʿab al-Īmān.
I say: This is a weak chain, and it has two defects. The first is Abū al-Zubayr’s ʿanʿanah (use of the ambiguous “from” formula), for he practised tadlīs. The other is the weakness of al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Jaʿfar. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Weak in hadith, despite his worship and virtue.”
- As for the hadith of ʿAlī, ʿAlī ibn Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar narrates it: al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to us from Zayd ibn ʿAlī, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, from him. Abū Nuʿaym recorded it in al-Ḥilyah (3/202) and said: “It is singular among the reports of Jaʿfar from his forebears through a connected chain. We have not recorded it except by this route.”
I say: It is weak. I do not know ʿAlī ibn Ḥafṣ or al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥusayn. Zayd ibn ʿAlī is Ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Zayd ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, Abū al-Ḥusayn, the grandson
