that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, went out to relieve himself and found no one to accompany him. Then Umar went out and followed him with an earthenware vessel or a water-container. He found him prostrating in a secluded place, so he withdrew and sat behind him until the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his head and said: “You did well, Umar. When you found me prostrating, you moved away from me. Gabriel came to me and said: ‘Whoever invokes blessings upon you once, Allah confers blessings upon him tenfold and raises him ten ranks.’”
Al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (642). Salamah ibn Wardān is weak, though not accused of dishonesty, so he is suitable for corroboration. The hadith has another corroborating report from the hadith of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, which I have traced in al-Irwāʾ (467).
The hadith is cited in al-Fatḥ al-Kabīr with the wording: “Gabriel came to me and said: ‘O Muhammad, would it not please you ...’” and so on. I have not found it in this wording in any source. In al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr (1/11/1), it reads: “The angel came to me and said ...” and so on. However, al-Nasāʾī’s wording is: “Gabriel came to me ...”
- “Gabriel came to me and said: ‘O Muhammad, instruct your Companions to raise their voices in the talbiyah, for it is among the rites of Hajj.’”
Ibn Mājah (2/216–217), Ibn Ḥibbān (974), al-Ḥākim (1/450), and Aḥmad (5/192) recorded it through Sufyān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Labīd, from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab, from Khallād ibn al-Sāʾib, from Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said it. The wording is Ibn Ḥibbān’s. The others said: “Gabriel came to me ...,” with the remainder exactly the same. Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.”
