It was narrated by al-Bukhārī (2/63), Muslim (1/66), and Aḥmad (5/152, 159, 161).
Ibn Ḥibbān (10) reported the hadith of Abū al-Dardāʾ with a connected chain, through Hishām ibn ʿAmmār: ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from him. Hishām has some weakness; and perhaps for that reason al-Bukhārī said after the hadith of Zayd ibn Wahb: “It is mursal and not authentic; the authentic report is the hadith of Abū Dharr.”
Al-Suyūṭī cited the hadith in al-Jāmiʿ with the wording: “Gabriel came to me and said, ‘Give your Ummah glad tidings …’”—the hadith in its entirety. He said: “Aḥmad, al-Tirmidhī, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Ḥibbān narrated it from Abū Dharr.” Yet I have not found it with this wording in any of their works, nor did al-Nasāʾī record it. As for Ibn Ḥibbān, I have found it in Mawārid al-Ẓamʾān only as a hadith of Abū al-Dardāʾ, as mentioned above; and its wording is neither the wording cited by al-Suyūṭī nor is it complete. Then al-Suyūṭī cited it with the previously mentioned wording of al-Tirmidhī and said: “Al-Bukhārī and Muslim narrated it.” Yet he did not attribute it to al-Tirmidhī! Consider, then, how much defect there is in his work.
