Al-Hakim recorded it (3/176–177) through Muhammad ibn Mus'ab, who narrated to us from al-Awza'i, from Abu Ammar Shaddad ibn Abd Allah, from Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith:
“She entered upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I had a disturbing dream tonight.’ He asked, ‘What was it?’ She said, ‘It was dreadful.’ He asked, ‘What was it?’ She said, ‘I saw as though a piece of your body had been cut off and placed in my lap.’ He said, ‘You saw something good. Fatimah will bear a boy, Allah willing, and he will be in your lap.’ Fatimah then gave birth to al-Husayn, and he was in my lap, just as the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had said. One day, I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and placed him in his lap. Then I happened to turn away, and there were the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), overflowing with tears. She said, ‘So I said: O Prophet of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what is the matter with you? ...’”
He then cited it and said, “Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim.” Al-Dhahabi critiqued this, saying: “Rather, it is an interrupted and weak chain of transmission, for Shaddad did not live to meet Umm al-Fadl, and Muhammad ibn Mus'ab is weak.”
I say: However, it has numerous supporting reports that attest to its authenticity. Among them is what Ahmad recorded (6/294): Waki' narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn Sa'id narrated to me from his father, from Aishah or Umm Salamah. Waki' said: The uncertainty was his—that is, Abd Allah ibn Sa'id’s—that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to one of them: “An angel entered my house who had never entered upon me before. He said to me: ‘This son of yours, Husayn, will be killed; and, if you wish, I can show you some of the earth of the land in which he will be killed.’”
822 — “An angel entered my house who had never entered upon me before. He said to me: ‘This son of yours, Husayn, will be killed; and, if you wish, I can show you some of the earth of the land in which he will be killed.’”
He said, “He then produced some red earth.” I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Al-Haythami said (9/187):
