820 — “Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith is the best of my family.”
Al-Ṭabarānī and al-Ḥākim (3/255) narrated it through the route of ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim al-Kilābī, who said: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAmmār ibn Abī ʿAmmār, from Abū Ḥabbah al-Badrī—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this. Al-Ḥākim said: “Authentic according to Muslim’s conditions.” Al-Dhahabī concurred with him.
It is as he said, except that al-Kilābī had some weakness in his retention. For this reason, al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, though his retention is somewhat deficient.”
Al-Haythamī also cited the hadith in al-Majmaʿ (9/274) with this wording, together with the addition: “or among the best of my family.” He said: “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr and al-Awsaṭ, and its chain of transmission is good.”
