(1/25), and Ibn ʿAsākir (12/240/1), through ʿAmr ibn Abī ʿAmr, the client of al-Muṭṭalib, from Saʿīd—that is, al-Maqburī—from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet.
810 — “Before the Hour there will be tribulations like pieces of a dark night: a man will begin the morning as a believer and end the evening as a disbeliever, or end the evening as a believer and begin the morning as a disbeliever. Some people will sell their religion for worldly gain.”
It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (3/221, with the commentary of al-Tuḥfah), Ibn Abī Shaybah in al-Īmān (no. 64), al-Ḥākim (4/438–439), and al-Firyābī in Ṣifat al-Munāfiq (p. 66 of Dafāʾin al-Kunūz), through several routes from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Saʿd ibn Sinān, from Anas ibn Mālik, attributed to the Prophet with this wording. Al-Tirmidhī said: “This hadith is singular through this route.” The commentator said: “Al-Tirmidhī did not grade it good, though it apparently is good.”
And this is as he said, for Ibn Maʿīn declared Saʿd ibn Sinān trustworthy—and his judgment is sufficient. The hadith also has a corroborating report from Abū Hurayrah with the wording, “Hasten...,” which has preceded. Another corroborating report from Ibn ʿUmar will come with the wording, “It will surely engulf,” under no. 1267.
811 — “Al-Ḥasan is from me, and al-Ḥusayn is from ʿAlī.”
It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (2/186), Aḥmad (4/132), and Ibn ʿAsākir (4/258/2), through Baqiyyah, who said: Bujayr ibn Saʿd narrated to us from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, who said: “Al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdī Karib and ʿAmr ibn al-Aswad came to Muʿāwiyah. Muʿāwiyah said to al-Miqdām, ‘Did you learn that al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī has died?’ Al-Miqdām said, ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.’ Muʿāwiyah then said to him, ‘Do you regard it as a calamity?’ He replied, ‘Why should I not regard it as a calamity, when the Messenger of Allah placed him in his lap and said...’” He then cited the hadith.
