The first: from ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn Maysarah ibn Shurayḥ, who said: My father narrated to us from his father, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Maysarah ibn Shurayḥ, from Maysarah, from Shurayḥ, from him, as a Prophetic report with the same wording. It contains a story.
Abū Nuʿaym (4/140) and al-Khaṭīb (12/4) recorded it. The latter mentioned it in ʿAlī’s biographical entry and narrated through this chain from Maysarah ibn Shurayḥ, who said: “A woman came before Shurayḥ and said, ‘I have a penis and I have a vagina …’” He then cited the hadith, which states that he ordered her ribs to be counted and said: “The number of a man’s ribs is eighteen on the right side and seventeen on the left side.” Ibn Abī Ḥātim al-Rāzī said in al-Jarḥ wa-l-Taʿdīl (3/1/193): “I heard my father say: ‘I wrote down this hadith in order to hear it from ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh; but when I considered it, I found it akin to a fabricated report, so I deliberately did not hear it from him.’” As for the forefathers above him in the chain, I have not identified them.
The second: from al-Ḥārith, from him, as a Prophetic report with the same wording. Al-Ṭabarānī (1/122/2) and Ibn ʿAsākir (4/256/1) recorded it. Al-Haythamī said (9/182): “Al-Ḥārith al-Aʿwar is weak.”
The third: from Abū Ḥafṣ al-Aʿshā, from Abān ibn Taghlib, from Abū Jaʿfar, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, from him, with the same wording. He added: “Their father is better than they are.” Al-Khaṭīb (1/140) recorded it, and Ibn ʿAsākir (4/256/1) narrated it from him. I have not identified this Abū Ḥafṣ.
