Ibn Mājah also recorded it without the Bedouin’s statement.
A third corroborating report from Ibn Masʿūd will follow under no. 1152, with the wording: “Nothing transmits contagion to anything else.” It has also been narrated from the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, as follows: “There is no contagion, no belief in ill omens, no hāmah, and no Ṣafar; and flee from the leper as you flee from a lion.”
783 — “There is no contagion, no belief in ill omens, no hāmah, and no Ṣafar; and flee from the leper as you flee from a lion.”
Al-Bukhārī recorded it in suspended form (10/129), saying: “ʿAffān said: Sulaym ibn Ḥayyān narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Mīnā narrated to us, saying: I heard Abū Hurayrah relate it as a report attributed to the Prophet.” Abū Nuʿaym provided its connected chain through Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī and Salam ibn Qutaybah, both of whom narrated from Sulaym ibn Ḥayyān, ʿAffān’s shaykh in this chain. Thus, the chain is authentic. Ibn Khuzaymah also recorded it with a connected chain, as mentioned in al-Fatḥ.
Ibn Khuzaymah also recorded a corroborating report from the hadith of ʿĀʾishah, with the wording: “There is no contagion; but when you see a leper, flee from him as you flee from a lion.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said, while commenting on the phrase, “Flee from the leper,” in the preceding hadith: “I have not found it in the hadith of Abū Hurayrah except through this route and another route recorded by Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ṭibb, but it is defective.”
I say: Aḥmad also narrated it through another defective route, which is perhaps the one to which al-Ḥāfiẓ referred. See the preceding hadith, no. 781. After relating it from al-Bukhārī, al-Baghawī said in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (3/367, Islamic Office edition): “This is an authentic hadith.”
