It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (10/139, 197–198), Muslim (7/31), Abū Dāwūd (2/158), and Aḥmad (2/267), through the route of Ibn Shihāb, who said: Abū Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān informed me from Abū Hurayrah, attributing it to the Prophet. Al-Ṭaḥāwī also recorded it in Sharḥ al-Ma‘ānī (2/378).

It also has another chain, in which Abū Ṣāliḥ narrated it from him. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (10/176) and al-Ṭaḥāwī, without the Bedouin’s question and the response to it. Al-‘Alā’ ibn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān likewise narrated it from his father, from him. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2/158) and Aḥmad (2/397). Its chain is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria, and it contains “nawʾ” (belief in the influence of the stars) in place of “belief in ill omens.” Muslim also recorded it (7/32).

It has a corroborating report from the hadith of Ibn ‘Umar, similar to Abū Salamah’s hadith. It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (1/44, 2/363) and Aḥmad (2/24–25), through the route of Wakī‘, who said: Abū Janāb narrated to us from his father, from Ibn ‘Umar, attributing it to the Prophet. This is a weak chain: Abū Janāb, whose name was Yaḥyā ibn Abī Ḥayyah, is weak, and his father is unknown. Ibn ‘Amr has another, shorter hadith, which will come shortly under no. 788.

There is another corroborating report from the hadith of Ibn ‘Abbās. It was recorded by al-Ṭaḥāwī (2/277–278) and Aḥmad (1/269, 328), through the route of Sammāk, from ‘Ikrimah, from him. Its chain is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.
