776 — “A people’s maternal nephew is one of them.”
Al-Bukhari (6/431, 12/39), al-Nasa’i (1/366), and al-Darimi (2/243) narrated it through Shu‘bah, who said: Mu‘awiyah ibn Qurrah and Qatadah narrated to us from Anas, who said:
“The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, summoned the Ansar and asked, ‘Is there anyone among you who is not one of you?’ They replied, ‘No, except for a maternal nephew of ours.’ Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘A people’s maternal nephew is one of them.’”
The wording is al-Bukhari’s. Muslim also narrated it (2/106), as did al-Tirmidhi (2/324, Bulaq edition).
It has two other chains: the first, from Yazid ibn Harun, from Humayd, from Anas; and the other, from Hammad ibn Salamah, who said: Thabit informed us from him. Ahmad narrated both (4/201, 246), and both chains are authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.
The hadith also has corroborating reports from a number of Companions, including Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari. Abu Dawud (2/332–433) and Ahmad (4/396) narrated it from ‘Awf, from Ziyad ibn Mikhraq, from Abu Kinanah, in a report attributed to the Prophet. Abu Kinanah is unknown. It has been said that he was Mu‘awiyah ibn Murrah, but this has not been established, as stated in al-Taqrib; the rest of its narrators are trustworthy. Another is from Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, which al-Tabarani narrated in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (1/39/1).
777 — “He would take auspicious omens, but would not regard anything as an ill omen, and he liked a good name.”
Ahmad narrated it (1/257, 303, 304, 319).
