“Make it wider at the side of his head and at the side of his feet. Perhaps he has a date-palm branch in Paradise.”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission.
It was also recorded by Ibn Mandah and Abū Dāwūd (3332) through two other chains from ʿĀṣim ibn Kulayb, from his father, from a man of the Anṣār, who said:
“We went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for the funeral of a man from the Anṣār. When we returned, we met the messenger of a woman from Quraysh, who said: ‘So-and-so invites you and those with you to a meal.’ So he turned back and sat down, and we sat with him. Food was brought, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, put his hand to it, as did the others. They looked at the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and saw that the morsel was in his mouth, but he could not swallow it. So they held back their hands, waiting to see what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would do. He then took out his morsel and spat it out, saying: ‘I find ...’”—the rest of the hadith.
755 — “Our Lord, Exalted is He, will manifest Himself to us on the Day of Resurrection, laughing.”
Ibn Khuzaymah recorded it in al-Tawḥīd (153), as did al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, Tammām in al-Fawāʾid (83/2), and Aḥmad (4/407–408), through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, who said: “ʿAlī ibn Zayd narrated to us from ʿUmārah al-Qurashī, from Abū Burdah ibn Abū Mūsā, from his father,” who said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said”—and he then related it.
The wording recorded by Aḥmad, which is also one of Ibn Khaymah’s versions, is:
“Allah, Exalted is He, will gather the nations upon an open plain on the Day of Resurrection. Then, when it becomes apparent to Allah that He should distinguish among His creation, He will make appear before each people that which they used to worship. They will follow them until they are driven into the Fire. Then our Lord, Exalted is He, will come to us while we are upon an elevated place and say: ‘Who are you?’ We shall reply: ‘We are the Muslims.’ He will say: ‘What are you waiting for?’ They will say: ‘We are waiting for our Lord, Exalted is He.’ He will say: ‘Will you recognize Him if you see Him?’
