751 — “The believers most complete in faith are those with the finest character: those of gentle, approachable disposition, who get along with others and with whom others get along. There is no good in one who neither gets along with others nor is gotten along with.”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in his al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr (p. 125), and through him Abū Nuʿaym in Akhbār Aṣbahān (2/67): ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Sijistānī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥakam narrated to us; Yaʿqūb ibn Abī ʿAbbād al-Qulzumī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah, from Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with this wording. He said: “No one narrated it from Muḥammad ibn ʿUyaynah—the brother of Sufyān—except Yaʿqūb.”
I say: I did not find a biographical entry for him, while all the other men in its chain are deemed trustworthy.
In al-Majmaʿ (8/21), it says: “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ and al-Ṣaghīr, and its chain contains Yaʿqūb ibn Abī ʿAbbād al-Qulzumī, whom I did not know.”
I say: I subsequently identified him: he is Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq ibn Abī ʿAbbād, who was ascribed to his grandfather. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (4/203), “His standing is one of honesty; there is no harm in him,” and al-Samʿānī declared him trustworthy. Thus, the chain of transmission is established, and praise be to Allah.
The substance of the hadith also occurs in separate hadiths; see the preceding hadith, no. 284.
Among its supporting reports is the following hadith, with the wording:
“Indeed, the most beloved of you to me are those of you with the finest character: those of gentle, approachable disposition, who get along with others and with whom others get along. And the most hated of you to me are those who go about spreading malicious gossip, who separate loved ones, and who seek hardship for the innocent.”
