al-Targhīb (3/30).
I say: Al-Ḍiyāʾ likewise named him Ziyād. I have not identified this Ziyād. Al-ʿIrāqī said (3/117):
“It has corroborating reports from the hadiths of Abū Hurayrah and Ibn Masʿūd. The narrators of both are trustworthy, except that al-Zuhrī did not hear from Abū Hurayrah.”
I say: As for the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd, I have not located it at present. As for the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, its wording is:
“Whoever says to a child, ‘Come here, take this,’ and then gives him nothing, has told a lie.”
Ibn Wahb recorded it in al-Jāmiʿ (80), with an authentic chain to Ibn Shihāb, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed directly to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Aḥmad also recorded it (2/452).
This is a chain whose narrators are trustworthy, but it is interrupted between Ibn Shihāb and Abū Hurayrah, for he did not hear from him, as al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mundhirī (3/29) and al-ʿIrāqī stated.
- “Indeed, he will not commit an offense for which you are held accountable, nor will you commit one for which he is held accountable.”
Al-Nasāʾī (2/251), Aḥmad (2/226–228 and 4/163), and al-Dūlābī in al-Kunā (1/29) recorded it through Iyād ibn Laqīṭ, from Abū Rimthah, who said: “I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with my father. He asked, ‘Who is this with you?’ He replied, ‘My son; I bear witness to that.’” He then said the words quoted above.
