I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Ibn Jābir is trustworthy, and his reports are relied upon in both Sahihs. Ṭālib ibn Ḥabīb is truthful but makes mistakes, as stated in al-Taqrīb. Through his route, it was also recorded by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (fol. 24/2), al-ʿUqaylī (196), and Ibn ʿAdī (208/1). Concerning Ṭālib, Ibn ʿAdī said: “I hope that there is no harm in him.”
Regarding the hadith, al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (5/106): “It was reported by al-Bazzār, and its narrators are those of the Sahih, apart from Ṭālib ibn Ḥabīb ibn ʿAmr, who is trustworthy.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in Fatḥ al-Bārī (10/167): “Its chain is good.” Al-Sakhāwī said in al-Maqāṣid: “Its narrators are trustworthy.”
- “Had you not given him anything, a lie would have been recorded against you.”
It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2/313), Aḥmad (3/447), al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī in al-Mukhtārah (58/184/1), and also al-Kharāʾiṭī in Makārim al-Akhlāq (p. 33), from al-Layth, from Ibn ʿAjlān, who was told by a man among the clients of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah al-ʿAdawī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to our house when I was a boy. I went out to play, so my mother said: ‘O ʿAbd Allāh, come and I shall give you something.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked: ‘What did you intend to give him?’ She replied: ‘Dates.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then said the words cited above.”
Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from the unnamed client. Al-Bayhaqī also reported it through this route. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā likewise reported it, naming him Ziyād, as stated in
