This hadith has also been narrated on the authority of Abū Umāmah, but its chain contains a narrator suspected of fabrication. I therefore did not deem it suitable for corroboration, and so included it in the other series (1637).
- “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘By My might, I shall not grant My servant two securities or two fears. If he feels secure from Me in this world, I shall make him fear on the Day when I gather My servants; but if he fears Me in this world, I shall grant him security on the Day when I gather My servants.’”
Abū Nuʿaym recorded it in al-Ḥilyah (6/98) through two routes from Muḥammad ibn Yaʿlā: ʿUmar ibn Ṣubḥ narrated to us from Thawr, from Makḥūl, from Shaddād ibn Aws, that the Messenger of Allah said it. He then cited it.
I say: This chain is extremely weak. Ibn Ḥibbān and others said of ʿUmar ibn Ṣubḥ: “He fabricates hadith.” However, it has another route, recorded by ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak in al-Zuhd, no. 157: “ʿAwf informed us, from al-Ḥasan, who said: The Messenger of Allah said”—and he cited something similar.
This chain is authentic, but mursal. Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāʿid connected it in Zawāʾid al-Zuhd (158), saying: “Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Maymūn narrated to us in Basra: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAṭāʾ informed us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet,” with something similar.
Al-Bazzār also narrated it from this Ibn Maymūn. Al-Haythamī cited it in al-Majmaʿ (10/308), through both routes—the mursal report from al-Ḥasan and the connected report from Abū Hurayrah—and said: “Both were narrated by al-Bazzār from his shaykh, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Maymūn, whom I do not know. The remaining narrators of the mursal chain are narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ, as are those of the connected chain, apart from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah, whose hadith is good.”
