- “If a man spends on his family, seeking reward thereby, it is charity for him.”
Al-Bukhārī (1/20), al-Nasāʾī (1/353), and al-Ṭayālisī (p. 86, no. 615)—whose version provides the wording—recorded it on the authority of Abū Masʿūd al-Badrī, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
In a version recorded by al-Bukhārī (6/189), “a Muslim” appears in place of “a man.”
- “If a woman spends from the food of her home without being wasteful, she will have the reward for what she spends; her husband will have the reward for what he earns; and the storekeeper will receive the same. None of them diminishes another’s reward in any way.”
Al-Bukhārī (2/117, 119, 120), Muslim (3/90), Abū Dāwūd (1/267), al-Nasāʾī (1/351–352), al-Tirmidhī (1/130), who graded it authentic, Ibn Mājah (2/44), and Aḥmad (6/44, 99, 278) recorded it on the authority of ʿĀʾishah, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
The opening part is corroborated by a report with the wording: “If a woman spends from her husband’s earnings without his permission, he will have half of its reward.”
- “If a woman spends from her husband’s earnings without his permission, he will have half of its reward.”
Al-Bukhārī (3/8 and 6/292), whose wording is cited here, Muslim (3/91), Abū Dāwūd (1/267), and Aḥmad (2/316) recorded it on the authority of Abū Hurayrah. However, Abū Dāwūd said: “She will have half of his reward.”
