726 — “We take your favorable omen from your mouth.”
It was reported by Abū Dāwūd (2/158–159), Aḥmad (2/388), Ibn al-Sunnī (no. 286), and al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Jawharī (fol. 28/1), through Wuhayb, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from a man, from Abū Hurayrah: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, heard a word that pleased him, and said...” He then mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission, were it not for the unnamed man. However, he has been named: Abū al-Shaykh transmitted it in Akhlāq al-Nabī (p. 270) through two other routes from Wuhayb with the same chain, except that he said, “from his father.” His father was Abū Ṣāliḥ, whose name was Dhakwān, a trustworthy narrator transmitted by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Thus, the hadith is authentic, praise be to Allah.
It also has a supporting narration from the hadith of Kathīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Muzanī, from his father, from his grandfather, with the same wording. It was reported by Abū al-Shaykh, Ibn al-Sunnī (285), and Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (274/2). He said: “Most of Kathīr’s hadiths are not corroborated.”
Al-Ṭabarānī also reported it through his route in al-Kabīr and al-Awsaṭ. Al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (5/106): “Kathīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh is very weak. Al-Tirmidhī nevertheless graded his hadith as good, while the rest of its narrators are trustworthy.”
It has another supporting narration from the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, with similar wording. Abū al-Shaykh reported it from Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAmmār, who said: Mubārak ibn Fuḍālah informed us, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from him.
This is a weak chain: al-Mubārak is weak, and Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAmmār is unknown.
