“Ismāʿīl ibn Umayyah, also said to be Ibn Abī Umayyah, narrated from Abū al-Ashhab al-ʿAṭṭāridī. Al-Dāraqutnī deemed him abandoned.”
It has a supporting narration from ʿAlī, who said: “There was a female circumciser in Medina, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent word to her: …” Then he cited it. Al-Khaṭīb transmitted it (12/291) through ʿAwf ibn Muḥammad Abū Ghassān, who said: Abū Taghlib ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Anṣārī narrated to us; Misʿar narrated to us, from ʿUrwah ibn Murrah, from Abū al-Bakhtarī, from him. He mentioned this in ʿAwf’s biography and quoted Ibn Mandah as saying: “ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī and Bandar narrated from him.” He mentioned neither criticism nor accreditation concerning him.
I have found no biographical notice for this Abū Taghlib. The rest of its narrators are known and trustworthy, and are among the narrators cited in al-Tahdhīb; but Abū al-Bakhtarī, whose name was Saʿīd ibn Fayrūz, heard nothing from ʿAlī.
It has another supporting narration, from al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Qays, who said: “Umm ʿAṭiyyah was a female circumciser in Medina, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said …” Then he cited it. Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted it in Tārīkh Dimashq (8/206/1), from Abū Umayyah al-Ṭarsūsī, who said: Manṣūr ibn Ṣuqayr informed us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAmr informed us, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from him. He said: “Abū al-Ṭayyib mentioned that this al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Qays was someone other than al-Fihri.”
I say: This is what more than one scholar stated definitively, and al-Tahdhīb relates it from Ibn Maʿīn and al-Khaṭīb.
