Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

and thus serves as an acceptable supporting report for this hadith. And Allah knows best.

721 — “The dinar is a treasure, the dirham is a treasure, and the qirāṭ is a treasure.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, we know what the dinar and dirham are, but what is a qirāṭ?” He said: “Half a dirham, half a dirham, half a dirham.”

Al-Ṭaḥāwī narrated it in Mushkil al-Āthār (2/107) through Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ, who said: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from Ibn Hubayrah, from Abū Tamīm al-Jayshānī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.

I say: This is a good chain of transmission, and its narrators are trustworthy. Reports from Ibn Lahīʿah are to be treated with caution only when transmitted by narrators other than the ʿAbādilah; for their reports from him are authentic, as the scholars have explicitly stated in his biography. This is transmitted from him by one of them, namely Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who was ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Muqriʾ. It was also corroborated by the second of them, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb. Ibn Abī Ḥātim cited it through his route in al-ʿIlal (1/219–220) and said: “My father said: ‘This is a rejected hadith!’”

In my view, there is no basis for this. It seems that he simply followed the usual approach concerning Ibn Lahīʿah. The correct position is the distinction I have mentioned: between the reports transmitted from him by other narrators and those transmitted by the ʿAbādilah. And Allah knows best.

This distinction also makes clear the basis for al-Manāwī’s statement, in his commentary on al-Suyūṭī’s words in al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr, “Ibn Mardawayh narrated it from Abū Hurayrah”: “With a weak chain of transmission. It was also narrated from him in al-Firdaws, with its chain left blank.”

The reason is that Ibn Mardawayh may have transmitted it through someone other than the ʿAbādilah from Ibn Lahīʿah, or through some other weak narrator. And Allah knows best.
