Among the reports that corroborate it is the hadith of ‘Amr ibn Hurayth, who said: “It is as though I can see the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, upon the pulpit, wearing a black turban with its two ends hanging down between his shoulders.” In another wording: “its end.” It was narrated by Muslim (4/112), Abu Dawud (4077), al-Nasa’i (2/300)—the alternative wording being reported by the latter two—and Ibn Majah (3587).
Also included is the hadith of Aisha: “Gabriel, peace be upon him, came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, riding a mule and wearing a turban, with its end hanging between his shoulders. I asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: ‘Did you see him? That was Gabriel, peace be upon him.’” It was narrated by Ahmad (6/148, 152) and al-Hakim (4/193–194), who said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi concurred.
I say: Both of them erred, for its chain includes ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar al-‘Umari, the elder, and he is weak.
- “Whoever gives up fine clothing out of humility before Allah, despite being able to afford it, Allah will call him forth on the Day of Resurrection before all creation, until He gives him the choice of whichever garments of faith he wishes to wear.”
It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2/79), al-Hakim (4/183), Ahmad (3/439), and Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilyah (8/48)
