(8/126), as did al-Diya’ al-Maqdisi in al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah (Selected Hadiths) (257/2), through several routes from al-Haytham ibn Ayyub al-Talqani, who said: Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad narrated to us from Mansur, from Muslim al-Butayn, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, attributed to the Prophet. Abu Nu‘aym said: “It is singular among the reports of Mansur and Fudayl; no one narrated it from him with a connected chain except al-Haytham.”
I say: He was a distinguished, trustworthy narrator, and those above him in the chain are trustworthy narrators used by the two Shaykhs. Thus, the hadith has an authentic chain of transmission.
709 — “No man of my Ummah drinks wine but that no prayer will be accepted from him for forty days.”
Ibn Khuzaymah reported it in his Sahih (1/103/2) through ‘Abdullah ibn Yusuf, who said: Muhammad ibn al-Muhajir narrated to us from ‘Urwah ibn Ruwaym, from Ibn al-Daylami—who lived in Bayt al-Maqdis—that he spent some time seeking ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As in Medina. He asked about him, and they said: “He has travelled to Mecca.” So he followed him and found that he had gone on to al-Ta’if. He followed him and found him in a farm, walking arm in arm with a Qurashi man who was weighing out wine. When I met him, I greeted him, and he returned my greeting. He said: “What has brought you out today, and where have you come from?” I informed him, then asked him: “O ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, did you hear the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say anything concerning the drinking of wine?”
He said: “Yes.” The Qurashi then pulled his hand away and left. He said: “I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say”—and he then mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain according to Muslim’s criteria. Al-Hakim also reported it through this route (1/257–258) and said: “Authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs!” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him!
I say: As for this Ibn al-Muhajir—he is the Syrian Ansari—al-Bukhari did not report from him except in al-Adab al-Mufrad.
